Marangoni instability of a liquid layer is studied theoretically which occurs due to transient mass transfer from the above gas phase. It is shown for three-dimensional small disturbances that the critical Marangoni number for steady convection is given by 80 in the limit of zero wavenumber. A brief comment is made on unsteady convection. It is then shown that twodimensional disturbances of long wavelength are governed by a nonlinear evolution equation. Its steady solution is obtained numerically.
