To weanling male albino rats (Wister strain), one of the experimental semipurified diets containing 1% of phytic acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, lactic acid or ascorbic acid was ad libitum fed for 31 days. As a control, a diet with the same composition as the experimental diets but not containing any acid was given to rats. In rats fed the diet containing 1% of phytic acid, both food intake and body weight gain were decreased. When 1% of oxalic acid was added to diet, body weight gain of rats was decreased. But their food intake was not changed. In rats fed diet containing 1% of citric acid, tartaric acid, lactic acid or ascorbic acid, their food intake and body weight gain were about the same as the control group. The fresh weight of liver, kidney, tibia or femur of rats fed the diet containing phytic acid was smaller than the other diet groups. The fresh weight of liver or kidney of rats fed the diet containing oxalic acid was about the same as the control. But, the fresh weight of tibia or femur was smaller than the control group. The fresh weight of liver, kidney, tibia or femur of rats fed diet containing citric acid, tartaric acid lactic acid or ascorbic acid was the same level as the control. In rats fed the diet containing phytic acid, the apparent absorption of dietary zinc, copper, iron, calcium, magnesium or phosphorus was significantly lower than the control. In rats fed the diet containing oxalic acid, the apparent absorption of zinc, calcium or magnesium was lower than the control. But, the absorption of copper or phosphorus was higher than the control. When 1% of citric acid was included in diet, the absorption of calcium was decreased, but magnesium absorption was elevated. When 1% of tartaric acid was included in diet, the absorption or calcium was decreased, but copper absorption was elevated. In rats fed the diet containing lactic acid, the apparent absorption of zinc, copper, iron, calcium, magnesium or phosphorus was about the same as the control. When 1% of ascorbic acid was included in diet, the absorption of calcium was lower than the control. But, the absorption of copper was higher than the control.
