Thirteen cases of trochanteric and subtrochanteric femoral fractures were treatea using an external fixator svstem for the first time, the proximal two screws of which penetrated the calcar femorale. The fixation was strong enough for even unstable or comminuted fractures to support the patient's weight shortly after surgery without fear of shortening or varus deformity. However, it was difficult to treat bedside fractures in elderly inpatients with other visceral diseases using an external fixator because of their poor general condition.
