We have developed a novel gap measurement method called the “Advanced reflection analysis (AREA)” method, which is based on the analysis of the intensity of the reflected light from a reflective liquid crystal cell. By taking account of the anisotropy of the optical property of a half-mirror and reflected light from a cell surface, an accurate microscopic measurement of cell gap can be realized using a reflective polarization microscope.
