Compact diode-pumped Nd:YAG lasers and 5-cm-long iodine cells are used to establish a portable wavelength standard at 532 nm and 1064 nm. Doppler-free absorption lines of the 127 I2 molecule were found using modulation transfer spectroscopy to have a very high signal-to-noise ratio (5000 in a 50 Hz bandwidth). The maximum frequency excursion of the stabilized lasers was less than 120 kHz (at 1064 nm) over 50 min, with an averaging time τ= 10 s.
