The Casimir energy between perfectly conductive plates that are coated with a dielectric material is studied. We determine the dependence of the Casimir energy on the thickness of the dielectric layer for a fixed separation between the dielectric layers. For a small separation between the dielectric layers, it is observed that the absolute magnitude of the Casimir energy increases monotonously with a decrease in the thickness of the dielectric layers. However, we show that the absolute magnitude of the Casimir energy increases with the thickness of the dielectric layers for a large separation between the layers, and this inversion results from a particular change in the zero-point energy of the transverse magnetic modes.
