To understand the properties of gamma-irradiated transformer oils, we measured the electrical breakdown voltages and dissolved components in the oils after gamma irradiation. From the voltage measurements and an analysis of H2O concentration in the oils, we concluded that the voltages have a strong negative correlation with H2O concentration. We also confirmed that overall chromatographic profiles of the oils were unchanged, regardless of the generation of H2O and volatile components by the gamma irradiation. We concluded that the intrinsic properties required for transformer oil are not affected by gamma irradiation up to a dose of 850 kGy.
