By using tunable terahertz pulses, we have controlled the phase of the electric field of the free induction decay (FID) emitted from water vapor at 0.55 THz frequency. The shift of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the excitation terahertz pulse was observed to change the phase of the FID field. Also, a clear dip due to the interference between the excitation terahertz pulse and the FID was observed. We have also controlled coherently the amplitude of the FID signal of water vapor at 0.55 THz frequency with two terahertz pulses of the same CEP’s. The amplitude of the FID increased when the excitation terahertz pulses interfered constructively. On the other hand, the amplitude of the FID decreased for the destructive interference case.
