We propose a size-dependent plating method based on an electroless nickel plating solution including ammonium chloride to fabricate a metal-coated fiber probe for near-field optical microscopy. This method involves tapering a silica fiber, surface activation, and electroless plating. Using the solution containing NH4Cl at a concentration of 1.5 mol$\cdot$dm-3 or more, we fabricated a protrusion-type probe with a nickel coat and with high reproducibility.
