We have studied the high-bias/current break of Pt nanocontacts at room temperature by measuring the conductance ("break conductance") at the contact break. The distribution of the break conductance exhibits a broad single peak, the position of which shifts linearly with the contact current. From the observed peak shift, we showed that the contact break most likely takes place when the contact current density reaches a critical value $ j_{\text{c}} \sim 5 \times 10^{10}$ A/cm2. This $ j_{\text{c}}$ of Pt nanocontacts is lower than that of noble metals and disproves the speculated positive correlation between $ j_{\text{c}}$ and the melting point of metals. Possible mechanisms responsible for the observed low $ j_{\text{c}}$ of Pt are discussed.
