In a near-field optical readout system using a solid immersion lens (SIL), comparisons of the readout characteristics of different types of disc structure were made. We measured the frequency responses of the readout signals of a Si-etched disc, an injection molded polycarbonate disc and a phase-change disc. The calculation results obtained by an approximate vector diffraction method agreed well with the measured differences between the readout characteristics of the three discs.
