A tunable C-plus-L-band fiber ring laser, based on a semiconductor optical amplifier, which directly connects an erbium-doped fiber amplifier with a 16 m long erbium-doped fiber, has been proposed and experimentally investigated. A side-mode suppression ratio of $>40$ dB/0.1 nm and an output power of ${>}3$ dBm in the operating range from 1552 to 1610 nm have been achieved for this ring laser.
