The attenuation and the velocity shift of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in a GaAs–Al0.3Ga0.7As asymmetric double quantum well structure are investigated under nonequilibrium conditions. When the electron density is in the vicinity of the occupation threshold of the second subband, the SAW transmission in the quantum Hall regime is suppressed over the entire magnetic field range with a large magnitude. The suppression is quenched in the presence of a dc current whenever the Fermi level lies just above the Landau gaps associated with the first subband, resulting in marked oscillations in the SAW transmission.
