A sound power reduction phenomenon caused by mutual radiation impedance between underwater transducers is the basic theory applied to the underwater active acoustic control technique. The phenomenon also involves an unexpected power reduction problem of a SONAR projector, which lowers its frequency and has higher power specifications. In this paper, radiation power outputs of individual transducers are calculated from self/mutual radiation impedances, which are numerically obtained from Rayleigh's multiple integral form. The total radiation power output as a function of the phase difference angle between transducers is presented and verified by model experiments using an array projector made of piezoelectric rubber. Sound absorption and power reduction of the experimental array are visually displayed on the 3-D mapping of the measured complex acoustic intensity. Theoretical and experimental results show good agreement.
