We report that when a material that has a longitudinal dipole, (and therefore a positive dielectric anisotropy), is added to liquid crystalline materials that have a large negative dielectric anisotropy, that greatly improved vertical alignment is achieved. Specifically the addition of 5CB, with a weight percentage ranging from 2% to higher than 10%, to a commercial high negative $\Delta\varepsilon$ material, is found to change the alignment of the mixture from homogeneous to vertical. We also provide an explanation of the contradiction of this result with previous predictions that materials with a negative dielectric anisotropy should favor vertical alignment, while positive materials should favor homogeneous alignment.
