A new 4-domain (4-D) twisted nematic (TN) configuration which requires two different alignment layers with different pretilt angle is proposed. The detail processes for realization of this 4-D TN are given. The optical simulation of the viewing angle characteristics shows this 4-D TN display has a homogenous viewing angle feature. The optical averaging effect from different subpixels is confirmed by our testing cells.
