The method for the stable operation and possible multi-level recognition of an optical digital-to-analog converter are investigated for application to the optical header processor of an optical packet switch. The method of combining split header pulses in orthogonal polarization was utilized for suppressing power fluctuation due to phase noise. We measured the bit error rate (BER) dependence on the relative polarization angle between split header signals, and a BER of less than $10^{-9}$ was realized with a relative polarization angle range within 6°. We also performed BER measurements at various threshold voltages, and we verified that four-level recognition is possible with error-free performance.
