A statistical analysis was made on 560 surgically operated cases of the maxillary sinus. The cases consisted of 267 cases of chronic sinusitis with bilateral maxillary operations (BMO),83 cases of chronic sinusitis with unilateral maxillary operation (UMO),157 cases of unilateral maxillary sinusitis (UMS),9 cases of dental maxillary sinusitis (DMS) and 43 cases of maxillary cancer (MC). Average age in BMO was younger than that in UMS. Prevalence periods in BMO were longer than those in UMS. BMO and UMO, i.e. bilateral maxillary sinusitis cases had more frequent complaints of nasal allergy than the UMS cases. UMS and DMS cases had more frequent complaints of cheek pain or cheek swelling in comparison with bilateral maxillary sinusitis. MC cases had nasal bleeding. The cause of UMS does not depend significantly on septal deviation. There were bilateral nasal polyps in approximately 10% of not only UMS but also MC.
