A Case of Multiple Gastric Carcinoids Associated with Type A Gastritis Treated by Endoscopy

Gastric carcinoid, a relatively rare endocrine tumor, has relatively low biological malignancy potential associated with type A gastritis. We report multiple gastric carcinoids associated with type A gastritis treated successfully endoscopically. A 60–year–old woman found endoscopically to have three small polypoid lesions on the upper gastric body against an atrophic mucosa background was found in an endoscopic gastric secretion test to have achlorhydria. Endoscopic biopsy showed the carcinoid nature and endoscopic ultrasoundgraphy a homogeneous low echoic mass invading to the submucosal layer. Laboratory data showed hypergastrinemia and positive antiparietal–cell antibody, yielding a diagnosis of multiple gastric carcinoids associated with type A gastritis. We endoscopically resected the small polypoid lesions. In the 26 months since, neither recurrence nor metastasis has been seen. Gastric carcinoid therapy associated with type A gastritis is controversial but we found endoscopic resection useful in its treatment.
