The quality of the X-ray units used for mammography at 31 institutions in the Kinki area were assessed according to the quality assurance manual produced by the Japanese Society of Radiological Technology. The accuracy and reproducibility of the X-ray tube voltages were evaluated at the 26, 28, 30 and 32 kV values indicated by each units with Mo/Mo, using the Full Function Meter RMI 242 (GAMMEX). Reproducibility was assessed using the coefficient of variation for four separate measurements at the same voltage. The half value layer was measured at the same X-ray tube voltage using a Radiation Monitor 9015 : 10* 5-6 M chamber (Radcal) and 99.999% aluminum plates.
The error range of the nominal X-ray tube voltage values was 4 to 6 kV. The number of units with more than 5 % error were 16. 1% (5/31) at 26 kV, 19. 4% (6/31) at 28 kV and 32 kV, and 22. 6 % (9/31) at 30 kV. A coefficient of variation for reproducibility of more than 0. 02 was seen in 3. 2% of the units (1/31) at 26 kV, 6. 5% (2/31) at 28 kV, 16. 1% (5/31) at 30 kV and 6. 5% (2/31) at 32 kV. The maximal difference in the half value layer between units was about 0.1 mmAl at each X-ray voltage level.
Because of the degree of error in X-ray tube voltages and the differences in the half value layer at the same X-ray tube voltage, measurement of the half value layer is recommended for the quality control of mammographic equipment used for breast cancer screening.
