We have reviewed 104 cases of interval breast carcinoma detected by breast self-examination within two years after mass screening for breast carcinomas conducted during the period 1973-1994 to identify their characteristics. The tumors in 39 (37.5%) of these patients appeared to have been overlooked. In approximately half of the patients with interval breast carcinomas, the tumors were found by breast self-examination. The rate of early detection of interval breast carcinomas was good (66.7%), and the overall detection rate of interval breast carcinomas was 54.5%, the same as that for breast carcinomas found at an early stage by mass screening during the same period.
We also carried out age- and clinical/pathological stage-matched analysis to compare patients with interval breast carcinomas with a control group of patients with breast carcinomas found at an outpatient clinic. The incidences of lymph node involvement and solid adenocarcinoma were slightly higher in the group with interval breast carcinoma than in the control group, but the differences were not significant. There was also no significant difference between patient outcome in the two groups at a mean follow-up period of 93 months.
These results indicate that even if patients with rapidly growing carcinomas are included among those with interval breast carcinomas, their percentage is probably too small to produce a statistically significant difference.
