Mammographic screening for breast cancer was performed in Tokushima Prefecture from 1995-99. Of 13, 982 patients examined, 43 were diagnosed with breast cancer. The detection rate and sensitivity in all women and in those aged over 50 were 0.31% and 93.5%, and 0.39% and 97.0%, respectively. These results were significantly different from those of physical examination alone. The detection rate and sensitivity in women in aged under 49 were 0.19% and 84.6%, respectively, and these results, too, were better than the results of physical examination alone (although the difference was not significant). All the breast cancers detected in those women under 49 were early cancers. These results suggest that mammographic screening of women aged under 49 in Japan may be effective.
