Remarkable progress in imaging technologies has contributed to an improvement in the usefulness of mammography screening. It is therefore possible that the randomized mammography trials undertaken in the past could have underestimated the effectiveness of screening mammography in women aged 40-49. We determined the recall rate, detection rate and sensitivity of mammography screening with clinical examination in women aged 40-49.We compared these data with data from screening in women aged 50-69.
From 1994-98 we gave single-view mammography for breast cancer screening, combined with clinical breast examination, to 15, 271 subjects aged 40-49 and 17, 755 subjects aged 50-69 in Miyagi prefecture.
The average recall rate, detection rate and sensitivity for women aged 40-49 were 10.4%, 0.20% and 93.8%, respectively. The data for women aged 50-69 were 7.2%, 0.21% and 95.0%, respectively. The recall rate for women aged 40-49 was higher than that of women aged 50-69, but the sensitivities were almost equal. The node-negative rate in women aged 40-49 and those aged 50-69 were 80% and 84%, respectively. In the high-risk group (defined as women who had a family history and/or a past history of breast cancer), the detection rate in women aged 40-49 and in women aged 50-69 was 0.41% and 0.35%, respectively.
These data suggest that screening mammography combined with clinical breast examination may be an appropriate modality for screening women aged 40-49.
