We have made efforts at education about breast cancer including self-examination. In these approaches, we have emphasized the importance of MMG, increasing the current rate of MMG -combined screening for the interest, satisfaction and guidance of breast cancer patients. We also studied whether or not our approaches were useful for obtaining good screening results (raising screening standards).<BR>The results were as follows : 1) our incentive for conducting MMG was to detect breast cancer sufficiently early ; 2) as to the importance of MMG, the examinees wanted to have MMG -combined screening in addition to palpation and inspection ; 3) as to their satisfaction with MMG -combined screening, they were pleased with the highly accurate examination, and had a higher sense of security ; 4) the patients expected early dectection of unpalpable breast cancer ; 5) they had better understanding of compression of their breast during MMG. Our studies on 19 cases of breast cancer detected in our center between 1991 and 1997 revealed that 78.9% were without lymphatic metastasis, all were detected by screening combined with MMG, and 3 cases were unpalpable breast cancer. All the cases up to Stage II had had previous screening. In the cases of early detection, the rate of BSE was as high as 70%, and the interest of the patients about breast cancer was high. From these facts, our educational approach to breast cancer was useful for providing a better understanding of MMG-combined screening, and breast cancer screening and repeated instruction have played an important role in education about breast cancer. This has resulted in early detection of breast cancer, and increased the effectiveness of screening.
