US screening of 19, 236 women was carried out by six authorized ultrasonographers four year period. US was performed with real-time equipment using a 7.5-MHz probe. The ultrasonographers examined all breast lesions with vertical and transverse sweeps in about 8 min.
Significant images were recorded in the optical disc system, and the last results for the same patient were compared immediately with those obtained by the optical disc system. Breast cancer was detected in 109 cases (0.57% of those screened); 52 cases were early cancers, and 23 were nonpalpable cancers. The smallest of these was 5 mm in diameter.
These results suggest that US is useful for detecting early nonpalpable breast cancer, and the role of the ultrasonographer in cancer screening is expected to become more important as the incidence of breast cancer rises.
