The quality of life (QOL) of breast cancer patients detected by mass screening was assessed. The rates of early breast cancer and breast-conserving surgery in patients with cancers detected by mass screening were higher than in outpatients with breast cancer.
The body image score in patients who underwent breast-conserving surgery was higher than that in patients who underwent radical mastectomy. However, the total QOL score in patients with breast cancer was higher than that in patients with benign breast disease. The character and age of the patients influenced the total QOL score.
Methods of assessing QOL are still controversial because QOL questionnaires are diverse and the score does not always correlate linearly with its weight.
