PURPOSE : We carried out a study to clarify the clinical features of interval breast cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS : We divided 331 patients with primary breast cancer admitted to our hospital between 1987 and 1994 into two groups : 33 with interval breast cancer (interval group) and 298 with non-interval breast cancer (non-interval group). The interval group was further divided into 8 patients in a half-year group in whom new cancer growth was found within 6 months after the previous check-up, and 25 patients in a 2-year group in whom new cancer growth was found between 7 and 24 months. We then made a comparative study of their T-factor, histologic types, n-factor, disease period (Tnm), presence of subjective symptoms, and rates of survival in good health.
RESULTS : All of the interval group were shown to have a T-factor below T2, and their Tnm was also below II except for 1 patient with metastasis to the ribs. In the interval group, a number of patients had no subjective symptoms with significantly higher survival rates. However, their rate of survival in good health showed no significant difference. In the half-year group, the rates T0 + T1, n0, and Tnm I tended to be higher, but no significant difference was noted. No recurrence was noted in any patients of the half-year group, and two recurrent cases were encountered in the two-year group.
CONCLUSION : No significant difference was noted in the prognoses of breast cancer between the interval group and the non-interval group. Breast cancer found within 6 months after the check-up showed a tendency for slow progression, and therefore such patients are recommended to have check-ups every 6 months.
