Mass screening for breast cancer by inspection and palpation has been carried out by a single surgeon for 22 years in the northern area of Nara Prefecture. One hundred seventeen cases of breast cancer were detected in 144, 520 women, of which 103 were detected at the first checkup and 74 at the repeated checkup. T1 breast cancer was found in 103 cases (58%), the proportion being higher than that of cancers detected at Nara National Hospital Clinic. In particular, the proportion of T1 cancer was increased up to 84.4% in the group undergoing repeated breast cancer checkups within 1.5 years.
With regard to the prognosis, the 5-year survival rate of patients with breast cancer detected at checkups was 93.2%, and the 10-year survival rate 88.5%, both being better than those of patients seen at the clinic (88.3% and 71.7%, respectively).
Over the last 10 years, quality of life (QOL) has been improved by muscle- and breast-preserving surgery. Thus, repeated medical checkups especially within 1.5 years, contribute to detection of T1 breast cancers and improving the QOL. Women in general must be made more aware of the need to undergo medical checkups for breast cancer and repeated checkups within 1.5 years.
