To maintain a sufficient number of qualified reading doctors, we have frequently held training courses in mammography reading across the nation. For this purpose, constant improvement and maintenance of reading quality is essential, and we have tried to control the quality assurance of the training courses. To evaluate the effect of the training courses, questionnaires have been distributed to partipants at each course since the Osaka-I course was held in March, 2000. In addition, studies by means of questionnaires have also been carried out on applicants for grade-up examinations and instructors who have attended the courses. We critically evaluated the quality assurance and education effect of the courses and the examinations.
We have held 181 courses, at which questionnaire studies were done, up to March 31, 2006 ; 31 times in 2003, 41 in 2004, and 60 in 2005, the number of courses having increased recently. It was noteworthy that the more frequently the course was held, the lower the rate of certified reading physicians.
The present study investigated (1) the quality for all 181 courses and (2) important factors related to applicants that might influence course quality. The latter study was performed on training courses held between 2002 and 2005, when the number of participants increased (a total of 7, 208 answers at 151 courses). During a 2-year period following the previous 6 th report in 2003, there have been various changes in the performance of breast cancer mammography screening, such as management of the decreased certification rate at reading examinations, reappraisal of qualification standards, including a system for qualification renewal, and introduction of an examination for reading of two-projection mammograms.
In accordance with the rapid increase in training courses, many physicians who had not participated in breast cancer treatment previously, but were recently called for frequent reading of mammograms at primary screening institutions, began to attend the courses. Many problems, including the above issue, remain to be solved. We will continue our investigation in order to address other issues that are important for maintaining quality assurance at training courses and examinations.
