Recently, the number of women with augmented breasts has been increasing in Japan. However, little is known about how to conduct effective breast cancer screening, especially using MMG, for these women. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce ways of performing safer and more effective MMG screening for women with breast implants, as conducted at the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas, U. S. A. When women with breast implants undergo breast cancer screening, they always undergo diagnostic MMG with MLO and CC views with implants, in addition to MLO and CC implant displacement views (Eklund views) while the implant is pushed back and the breast tissue is pulled into view. These techniques are used to maximize the area and the quality of the breast tissue and also to reduce the risk of implant rupture with compression during MMG. Although there is a risk of implant rupture during MMG, it is relatively low. Therefore, it seems feasible to perform MMG for women with implants in Japan after adequate informed consent has been obtained.
