While the rate of breast cancer in Japanese women in their 40th or 50th decade is rather high, the rate of participation in breast cancer screening remains low and breast cancer mortality is increasing. Here we report our advocacy planning scheme that has been adopted by the Parent-Teacher Association for mothers of primary school pupils and junior high school students to increase the rate of participation rate in mass screening and to decrease the breast cancer death rate.<BR>In answer to questionnaires after having listened to survivors' testimony, mothers recognized that breast cancer was a problem that could affect them and understood the importance of participating in breast cancer screening. In order to increase the participation rate of women who are not concerned with, or ignorant about breast cancer, lectures by medical doctors alone do not appear to have much effect, and only testimony from women who have survived breast cancer appears to have a strong impact on the will of women to participate in screening.
