Screening mammography for breast cancer examination has been carried out in Kanazawa city by Kanazawa Medical Association since 2001. Recently mammography has become rapidly accepted for breast cancer screening throughout Japan. Even in Kanazawa city, it is expected that about ten thousand women a year will receive screening mammography within a few years. For better quality control, it is very important to have many qualified reading doctors and radiographers on call. Kanazawa Medical Association stipulates that mammography interpretation should first performed using triple checks by the reading doctors. For the increased number of screenings by mammography, a reading system has been revised. The mammograms are checked by a reading doctor and a radiographer working as a pair for quality control of mammography images. Eleven reading doctors and 18 radiographers are nominated. Two radiographers are requested as commentators, and the most active reading doctor in Kanazawa is requested as a supervisor. The checklist for mammography images was designed by them and submitted to those hospitals where mammograms were poorly read after a meeting to discuss the reading. At this meeting, not only qualified members but also young doctors, primary-care physicians and radiographers participated. The checked films were discussed intensively by all participants, and this was expected to improve the quality control and be of value to the reading doctors and radiographers. Good mammograms improve the reliability of reading, and a better system for screening mammography is needed to reduce the death rate due to breast cancer.
