Breast cancer screening by mammography was started at St. Luke's International Hospital in 1999. At that time, mammograms were interpreted using our own standard. In 2002, however, the screening system was changed by radiologists in response to authorization by the Central Committee for Quality Control of Mammography Screening, and standardized according to the Japan Imaging Reporting and Data System ; the J-RADS Lexicon. To examine the effect of this change, we evaluated both the new and old systems by the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System ; BI-RADS standard. As a result, the positive predictive value (PPV) based on abnormality in the screening examination, PPV when biopsy was recommended, cancers found per 1, 000 examinees and recall rate were all improved significantly. Thus we were able to gain a new understanding of the importance of quality control of breast cancer screening by mammography.
