Currently in Japan the numbers of patients with breast cancer and deaths from the disease are still increasing. We conducted a questionnaire investigation to clarify the extent of common knowledge among women about breast cancer and what they can do against it, and also any steps that can be taken to reduce the mortality rate due to breast cancer.
The study subjects were women aged 30 to 70 years living within 30 km of metropolitan areas, and also elsewhere, in Ehime Prefecture. The number of women surveyed was 680 and the questionnaires were sent by mail between October 2002 and February 2003. Answers were received from 652 (95.9%) of the women, 325 living in the metropolitan areas and 327 living elsewhere in the Prefecture.
Understanding about breast cancer was better among relatively younger women such as those in their 30s and 40s than among those in their 50s and 60s. Nearly 60% of them reported having breast cancer patients living close to them, among their relatives or friends. The importance of early diagnosis of breast cancer was understood by most of them, and the majority stated that they would choose to visit obstetricians/gynecologists for breast cancer checks. Although over 90% of the women knew about self-examination for breast cancer, only 36.3% of them reported actually doing it themselves, and only 15.8% of them did so every month. The most common reasons why they did not carry out self-examination were that they "did not know how to do it" or "could not understand the sensation". They were most likely to obtain knowledge about breast cancer from their friends or the mass media, and seldom from their doctors.
To reduce the mortality rate due to breast cancer, physicians must provide women with more information and be more proactive in teaching them how to carry out self-examination for breast cancer.
