We evaluated the results of screening for breast cancer in Kagoshima prefecture using mammography and physical examination, and considered the savings in both money and labor with the use of mammography alone.<BR>Screening with mammography and physical examination was performed in women over 40 years of age living in Kagoshima prefecture from April 2000. Breast cancer was found in 0.16% in 2000 and 0.18% in 2001, with the incidence for each of these years higher than the annual figures for 1995 to 1999. The detection rate was also high in women aged 40-49 years, and early cancers were found by this screening. The cost of detecting one breast cancer patient by mammography was calculated to be ¥1, 461, 432, and allowing for the detection of one false negative breast cancer by clinical examination cost ¥15, 249, 950. The number of doctors required to perform inspections and palpations was estimated at 340 per year. Furthermore, three additional breast cancer patients (0.15%) were detected in two years by screening with mammography alone. It is suggested that screening using mammography alone, without physical examination, is a viable option, especially in Kagoshima prefecture.
