Screening mammography for breast cancer examinations has been carried out in Kanazawa City by the Kanazawa Medical Association since 2001. For improving quality control, it was important to design a reading system. Therefore, the mammography interpretation was performed by first, second and third reading doctors, who were recommended to attend a training course followed by a quality assessment examination. In fact, many of them already had a rank A or B qualification in mammography reading. For the third reading doctor, we asked a specialist and active leader of mammography in Japan. It was necessary for the hospitals taking part in this screening to have a mammography machine conforming to the guidelines of the Japan Radiological Society. Radiographers were also recommended to undergo a training program. As a result of this procedure, 5 cases of breast cancer involving 2 cases without palpable tumors were found. The rate of close examination was decreased from 14.7% to 10.3% by the double and triple checks. The cancer detection rate was O.53%. Not only for the reading doctors and radiographers, but also for the clinical breast examination doctors of the medical association, we have to provide more opportunities to attend training programs and emphasize the importance of screening mammography in discovering the earlier breast cancers through various examinations.
