The practice of periodical check-ups for cancer screening is entrusted to each local government. Therefore, the control of the quality of screening is an important issue, particularly with respect to imaging and data analysis. This will be especially pertinent with the introduction of mammography for the screening of breast cancer. In Japan, the Association of Breast Cancer Screening, a central committee on quality control for mammographic screening has been established with the cooperation of related medical societies. This committee includes an education/training subcommittee and a facility/image assessment subcommittee. It is the first mechanism for cancer screening in Japan as no such system has yet been established for cancer screening of other organs. The education/training subcommittee has started educational activities and training for image analysis and imaging have been put into practice in order to maintain the diagnostic quality at a certain level. In addition, the facility/image assessment subcommittee is also preparing to assess image apparatus and imager quality in each screening facility. Looking to the future, social acknowledgement of this central committee for quality control and its cooperation with the quality control committee in each local region will be key factors to success.
