We investigated the change in mammographic density in women on hormone replacement therapy (HRT). A total of 298 women who were taking HRT (119 women received estrogens and 179 combined estrogens and progestins) enrolled in this study. Mammographic examinations were performed on both HRT users and a control group (789 HRT non-users) before and during therapy.
Mammographic density was estimated according to Wolfe's classification. The frequency of breast density (DY) was significantly higher in the HRT users over 50 years of age. In addition, high mammographic density was maintained in the long term HRT users.
We concluded that HRT was associated with a significant increase in mammographic density. Therefore, ultrasonography and other examination methods may be needed in patients on HRT with high mammographic breast density for breast cancer screening.
