Inquiries were made to two hundred and twenty nine school teachers in Chiba City (106 from elementary schools, 95 from junior high schools, and 28 from schools for handicapped children) about epileptic children at school. One hundred and ninety teachers (83%) answered.<BR>About half of elementary school and junior high school teachers understood epileptic children correctly and about eighty percent of school for handicapped children teachers understood them correctly. Eighty percent of the teachers were aware of the neurological status of the students which were informed by their parents. Eighty percent of the teachers questioned gave permission to their students with epilepsy to engage in physical education programs and other school activities only under careful surveillance.
