Recently various assay methods for antiepileptic drugs in blood have been developed and applied for clinical management of patients with epilepsy. we have evaluated a new MARKIT method based on a competitive binding enzyme immunoassay for serum phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone, and compared with a gas-liquid chromatographic method (GLC). The values obtained by the two methods were well correlated (r=0.961, Y =0.845X +1.083 for phenobarbital, r= 0.979, Y=0.835X-0.212 for phenytoin and r=0.960, Y=0.878 X-0.131 for primidone. X: MARKIT, Y: GLC).<BR>The MARKIT method is very simple, requires small amount of serum sample, and can be practically used in ordinal routine clinical laboratories provided with such common equipments as a colorimeter and a centrifuge.
