We studied the prevalence of family history of breast cancer in participants of a mass screening program for breast cancer in 1982 and 1994. We also compared these results with the prevalence of a family history in patients with breast cancer treated between 1982 and 1994 at Gunma University Hospital. In the first and second degree relatives of the probands, the prevalence of family history was higher (0.1>p > 0.05) in participants in 1982 (7.6%) or breast cancer patients (8.0%) than in 1994 (5.6%). In the first degree relative, the prevalence of a family history was significantly higher (p< 0.01) in participants in 1982 (4.7%) than in 1994 (2.4%).The reason of the low prevalence of a family history in the 1994 participants was probably the increased proportion of repeated participants. The proportion of repeated participants was 33% in 1982 and 89% in 1994. The participants with a family history had been selected as a high-risk group for breast cancer from repeated participants, and all were strictly followed up.
