Effects of Dual-Chamber Pacing in Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopaty

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of dual-chamber pacing in patients with drug-refractory hypertrophic obstructiove cardiomyopaty (HOCM). Seven HOCM patients with symptoms, such as syncope, fainting, palpitation and dyspnea, took the dual-chamber pacemaker implantation. Before and after the procedure, we studied the symptom, left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) pressure gradient and serum brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). LVOT pressure gradients diminished from 61.9±51.8 to 12.0±7.8 mmHg (p=0.019). All symptoms subsided after implantation of dual-chamber pacemaker. Serum BNP decreased from 454±378 to 295±317 pg/ml (P=0.074). These results suggest that Dual-chamber pacing is an effective treatment for patients with drug-refractory HOCM.
