Fundamental Study on the Stress in a Disc of Mechanical Heart Valve

In this study, in relation to the durability of a disc of mechanical heart valve, the stress distribution and the deformation are analyzed numerically by means of the finite element method for annular disc supported at three points(A, B, C)forming apexes of an isosceles triangle(BC: the base)and subjected to uniform pressure at the upper surface. The results obtained are as follows:(1)The maximum deflection appears at a center point of the arc BC on the outer perimeter of the disc, and its magnitude is about twice to fourth as large as deflection at the edge of the hole.(2)Stress concentration occurs in elements adjacent to the three supported points(A, B, C)and elements on a radius through the center of the arc BC. The largest tensile stress appears in the upper elements next the supported points B, C on the arc BC. The value of the largest stress is about 180 times as large as the magnitude of applied pressure, and its direction is circumferential(for the case in which the outer diameter is 20mm, the hole diameter 6mm and the thickness of disc 0.6mm).(3)The ratio of hole diameter to the outer diameter has only small effects on either the maximum deflection or the largest tensile stress of disc.(4)The maximum deflection and the maximum tensile stress are inversely proportional to cube and square of the thickness of the disc respectively. Several useful suggestions on the fracture mechanism of disc can be given by comparing these results with experimental results obtained from the durability testing(accelerated fatigue testing)of disc.
