History of Approaches Taken to Treat Medical Terms in Japan.

Medical terms consist of regular language or artificial words combined with adverbs of nouns to allow professional use. To examine the approaches taken to treat specific medical terms over the last 150 years, nine points were discussed: 1) development of medical dictionaries, 2) letters and characheristics, 3) expression of terms, 4) word formation, 5) approach to international information systems with a tree structure, 6) homonyms, 7) international compatibility of languages and terms, 8) new trends, 9) examples showing current features. As a result, four stages in the treatment of a medical term were proposed: 1) translation from foreign languages, 2) standardization of expression of terms, 3) participation in international communication systems, 4) comprehensive treatment of compatibility with different countries and academic fields.
