4,5-Dimethoxy-<I>o</I>-benzoquinone has been prepared by the oxidation of catechol with sodium iodate in methanol. In higher alcohols, the same oxidation occurs in the presence of a crown ether to give the corresponding 4,5-dialkoxy-<I>o</I>-benzoquinones. In the latter cases using 18-crown-6, the potassium salt is more effective than the sodium salt.
