4-Fluoreneacetic acid was prepared and its chloride was cyclized with AlCl<SUB>3</SUB> to give 4<I>H</I>-cyclopenta-[<I>def</I>]phenanthren-8-ol accompanied by the 8,9-dione. These were both reduced to 4<I>H</I>-cyclopenta[<I>def</I>]phenanthrene: the overall yield was 40–50% from diphenic acid. The phenol was converted to acetoxy and amino substrates.
