The photolysis of 4-methoxycarbonyl-2-oxatricyclo[6.2.2.0<SUP>1,5</SUP>]dodeca-4,6,9,11-tetraen-3-one derivatives yielded 9-methylenebarbaralanes along with 5-methylenetricyclo[4.3.0.0<SUP>2,9</SUP>]nonadiene and 1-methyleneindan derivatives. From the benzophenone-sensitization experiments, 9-methylenebarbaralane and 5-methylenetricyclo[4.3.0.0<SUP>2,9</SUP>]nonadiene were formed via a triplet excited state, but 1-methyleneindan was formed via a singlet excited state.
