• To study the geometrical and electronic structures of molecules, the paramagnetic shifts of substiuted aniline proton resoances due to complexing with nickel of cobalt acetylacetonates, M(AA)<SUB>2</SUB> (M=Ni or Co), were observed. The NMR spectra of sloutions containing an excess of niline derviatives and M(AA)<SUB>2</SUB> show contact (for Ni(AA)<SUB>2</SUB>) and pseudocontact (for Co(AA)<SUB>2</SUB>)shift rations for various ligand protons. The contact shift ratios for N–H and N–CH<SUB>3</SUB> protons reveal that the NH<SUB>2</SUB> or NHR group of aniline dervatives is not coplanar with the aromatic ring for the coordinate molecules. This was confirmed by pseudo-contact shift studies.
