The pyrolysis of formaldehyde was investigated in the presence of nitric oxide at 500 °C. The kinetics of the reaction suggests that the pyrolysis proceeds by means of a mechanism which is initiated by this reaction:<BR>NO+CH_2O→HNO+CHO<BR>and which involves this reaction:<BR>HNO+HNO→N_2+2OH<BR>as one of the chain-carrying steps.
