The photochemical reduction of sodium 9,10-phenanthraquinone-3-sulfonate (PQ) and sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate (NQ) to the corresponding diols has been studied in water containing cationic surfactants. Photoreduction of PQ was markedly accelerated in the presence of cationic surfactants whereas that of NQ, was highly retarded. Both the acceleration and retardation of the photoreaction of these quinonesulfonates in the presence of cationic surfactants are explained as due to the formation of association complexes betwen the quinones and the surfactants.
